SA embarks on maritime education ‘revolution’: Transport Ministry

Department of Education has now prioritized maritime education for the future: Chikunga

Maritime education and skills development in South Africa should soon become commonplace with an increasing number of tertiary level institutions from Further Education and Training (FETs) to universities being able to offer approved courses as a matter of course.

This and a number of related issues were among critical points the Transport Ministry shared liberally at the Africa Maritime Indaba 2013 held in Johannesburg this past week.

During a media conference on Friday, deputy Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga along with SA Maritime Safety Authority CEO, Tsietsi Mokhele shared the government’s broad plan for the country maritime industry with regards especially new policy development as well as initiatives towards making maritime education a common offering at the country’s higher institutions of learning.
